The now Old Yale Road (officially the Grand Trunk Road) opened back in the late 19th century as the Yale Wagon Road. It was then that fishing, logging, and farming became the primary industries to the settlers of the area.

It was back in the early part of 1907 that James and Edith Francis settled near what today is known as Fraser Highway and 160th Street. Over the nest ten years many of Edith’s family came to the area to join her and James. This was the Fleetwood clan and it was in August of 1915 that Thomas Fleetwood, Edith’s brother, joined the 47th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Thomas was sent to France to fight in WWI and it was there that he died on September 8th 1917 as a result of fatal wounds he received on the battlefield.

In honor of her brother, Edith made application to the provincial government to name her community after her war hero brother. The Fleetwood Community Association was founded by Edith and other local residents in 1923, followed by the Fleetwood Community Hall in 1930. Today that hall is the Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.

On September 6th 2008 the residents of Surrey witnessed the unveiling of a statue of Thomas Fleetwood, located at the Fleetwood Library.
